Dark Green Tree are Jay Brown Ross Cockburn, and Cera Impala. Starting out of a chance meeting in August 2010 between Jay Brown and Ross Cockburn when both were playing sets at St Brides Church in Edinburgh for the Festival – Ross and Jay briefly discuss writing some songs together in the future. However it is not until the spring 2014 when Ross goes to see Jay opening for Ben Bedford at the Voodoo Rooms that they finally sat down to write One Fine Day.
Around a month later both Jay and Ross drove down to Cambridge to work on more ideas with singer-songwriter and record producer Boo Hewerdine. In two days they are able to assemble the bones of all the tracks that will become the album SECRET LIVES.
July 2014 and recording of the album takes place at Mobile with a Home at Heriot Toun Studio, engineered by Mattie Foulds and produced by Boo Hewerdine. During recording, the idea of incorporating close female harmonies is discussed and Ross, having seen Cera sing with her own band The New Prohibition at Douglas Robertson’s Sound House in Edinburgh, suggests that her voice might fit well with Jay’s. The idea worked well in the studio and Cera became part of Dark Green Tree.
In September 2014 Boo Hewerdine delivered the unmixed album to Jon Kelly in London (producer for Kate Bush, Deacon Blue). Jon does three spot mixes of songs that the band are more than delighted with and they ask him to mix the rest of the album.
In October 2014 Jon Kelly offered to arrange for the album to be mastered by Tim Young at Metropolis Studios. Finally, in November 2014 Boo offered to release the album on his own Haven Label.
